From Persecution to Power: The Changing Face of the Witch
The word witch has undergone a striking transformation. Once a deadly accusation, it has been reclaimed as a powerful self-identifier. Online, the phenomenon is everywhere: TikTok trends under #WitchTok rack up millions of views, YouTubers share spells and rituals, and massive retailers cash in with T-shirts and tote bags with slogans like ‘we are the granddaughters of the witches you couldn’t burn’.


Meet Claire Mitchell KC
Claire Mitchell is a King’s Counsel, born in Glasgow, currently living in Edinburgh. In 2020 she co-founded the Witches of Scotland campaign with Zoe Venditozzi, to seek justice for those accused of witchcraft and executed as witches in Scotland.


Meet Dr. Alice Tarbuck
Alice Tarbuck is an academic, writer, and practising witch, based in Edinburgh. Through her work, she is able to combine her academic background with her longstanding personal interest in the craft.


A memorial made to wear
The non-profit organisation Witches of Scotland has registered an official tartan into the Scottish Register of Tartans, designed to memorialise the women and men who were accused and executed during the Scottish witch hunts.
